Hi everyone,
I have some black chicks (Ayam Cemanis) that are 5 1/2 weeks old, and I was outside with them and noticed that one of them had purple metallic on its ‘saddle’ feathers. Is this normal? I got them straight run so I’m not sure the genders but I’m hoping only one is a roo and the others are pullets. All replies and help are appreciated. Thanks.

I will try to post pics later or tomorrow. :)

Some black breeds, like Ayam Cemanis, Black Australorps, etc, do have feathers that shimmer in the sun. This is not an indicator of gender. The feather shape as well as the comb and wattles will tell you the gender.

I do have one that has waddles that are bigger and pointed feathers so I’m hoping that’s a boy and that one alone. :)
