I tried putting a male Silver pheasant in with Bobwhite quail and the pheasant pecked them violently so removed him. I've had those Bobwhite's in with a couple male Red Golden pheasant for going on a year and now my Bobwhite's are dying. No trauma. If I worm them they are ok for about a month and then start dying again. Seems too much worming but just put Ivermectin in their drinking water again. Out of eight I only have 3 left. Have been told they shouldn't be in with the pheasant and bad having them on the ground. The pen is 8 by 28 feet, 9 feet high with log roosts. Would appreciate suggestions as to why the quail are passing. They're pets so it's a bit heartbreaking. Thanks.
I have had Quail in with my Silver & Chinese Ring-Necked Pheasants in the past, & they were fine.
If the pheasant are in the pen first, I have had to acclimate them first by placing the quail in a cage, & then placing the cage w/quail inside the pen for 2-3 days.
First day, I open the door of the cage & see what happens when they venture out.
Last time, my juvenile silver male squeezed into the quail cage & nudged the rest of the quail that had stayed out, and claimed the cage as his! lol
Well, I should know from having peafowl for 8 years that they all have different personalities. I'm going to be in a great bit of trouble this next breeding season having too many males. Have no idea how I'm going to keep them seperated. Need in the worst way to sell some but when they've become pets it's rough. I don't want any of my birds going to anything but a good home and prefer the circumstances are such that they will be able to free range. Most people don't have adequate size pens for large birds like peacocks. I only have 1 quail left. Won't get any more. I rescued them having no idea their life spans were so short and that it's best to keep them off the ground. I wish I knew what exactly killed them off 1 at a time. Worming seemed to slow it down but to continue doing that once a month would have most likely caused other problems to their health. I worm my peafowl and pheasant every 6 months and have never in 8 years have one die. It's too sad for me.
Brrrrrrrrrr, it's cold out but shouldn't complain down here in the Texas Hill Country. Some of you folks are really getting some winter temperatures.
I have one pair of3/4 grown ring necks in with 100 pharaoh quail. The male quail chase the pheasants around the pen. Big pen on the ground. Pheasants will fly to roost pole sometimes.
