Can quail use ladders like chickens? I was thinking of a small 2 story pen. The style ladder would more a ramp than a ladder. I looked at other members pens and did not see any 2 story pens.

Kind of. Quail can go up and down but they don't learn such things very well. They'll spend all day running back and forth next to their ramp/steps/etc... without realizing they can go up or down even after they've done it several times. I had a button quail keep up the pacing for 2days without coming down for food or water until he just happened to run the right direction and go back down the ramp. Then he never figured out how to go back up until finally one of my alterations of the ramps led to them just happening to run across the path of the ramp about 50% of the time so they would end up a level up or down whether they planned to or not. I quit making multilevel button pens after that. Repeated experiments with coturnix led to much the same result and they rarely even used shelves or other raised areas. Maybe eventually they'd learn but unless you have food on both levels they might kill themselves before then.

No, they prefer elevators, but can't seam to peck the right button. They always wind up in the basement.

Always happy to help chicken folk understand that quail are not chickens, it never hurts to to have a sense of humor, and just because one doesn't like my answer, it doesn't make me stupid.

You can build multiple story pens for quail, just keep them in that story. They don't roam around from story to story like chickens. When they get to the basement, they stay there.

That's all I'm saying.

Some of my Button quail will use a ramp. They use the ramp to go in and out of their cages. I have a couple of buttons that will come out of their cage and will come and sit on our lap and watch tv with us. When they get tired they hop or flutter down and go back to their cage. And a couple of my buttons used a loft I built in their cage, but since then they have been moved to a different cage with out a loft. And the ones I put in that cage do not use the loft. But the majority of my buttons are scared and will only relax if I do not open their cage door. The cages with just the females will use a ramp to walk up to the cage door and will stand there until I open it and put a ramp there and then they use the ramp to come out. I raised them from birth. And all my cages have bridges in them and they love the bridges, and mirrors. We cover all our ramps with towels so they don't slip, I think that is why they like using the ramps. I like spoiling my buttons. Next step is teaching them to call in their own mealy worm order at the pet store so its ready when I get there!!! lol
