I'm totally new to chickens, and in the process of picking out some breeds to put in my chicken tractor (4x8 A frame). I was wondering if different varieties of chickens can live together, and it appears so after reading some of the posts on the forum. I was curious if RIR's, Barred Plymouth Rocks, and Easter Eggers can live together? I was thinking of getting 2 apiece, total of 6.. to start.

Also, do bantam varieties lay fewer eggs than standards. . or are they just smaller eggs?

Thanks!

Yes. That would be a flock, LOL. Aside from them establishing a pecking order, the things that would make me worry is one not eating enough (check crops at bedtime if you think so) and blood. They should be fine!

Those are exactly and the only breeds I have, they are very healthy and happy. The RIR's are top of the pecking order, followed by the Barred Rocks and then the EE. This is only because of the order that they were introduced to each other. They are all pretty good layers, again the RIR's lay the best, they are 1 year old and average 6 eggs a week. The others average 5-6 per week.

If 4x8 is the coop size and they can free range during the day that is an excellent set up, if you are planning 2 of each and they will be in the 4x8 all day you may well find that is not enough space. The general consensus is that 10 sq ft per bird is needed for the run and 3-4 sq ft for the coop at night.

thanks for the input..

At first the 4x8 will be home, untill I can build the run. It will be around 4 x 50 or so. I might just start with 4 but I'm afraid I might loose a couple just because I don't know what I'm doing
