Can/should I "rescue" a dozen Pekin ducks?

I went to a different feedstore today to see if they had duck feed for my week-and-a-half Magpie ducklings, and was met with a terrible sight.

Out on the baking pavement (were in a serious heatwave in the CA bay area) was a tiny pen crammed with Pekin ducks! They were nearly cheek-to-jowl in there with only a piece of cardboard for shade (and at the time I went the angle of the sun made it useless). They were obviously little ducklings only a few weeks ago -maybe 2 or 3?- and I guess there's been no interest for them (all the chicks were sold). Their feathers were so gross and filthy I thought at first they might be Buffs!

Of course, I realize that these are meat birds primarily, but still! It broke my heart to see them like that.

So I've been thinking. I already have a pen for my Magpie trio, but it can't hold any more ducks -plus I'd like to keep them separate for breeding. My plan was to pen them at night or when I'm gone and let them free-range during the day. We're on about 3 acres but it's not fenced entirely. Keeping the Magpies near the house won't be a problem, but these Pekins...

Is there any way I could keep them? Would they get along with my Magpies when everyone is fully grown? Could they get by with a "duckhouse" (not a pen)? Our area is very dry in Summer (actually, from whenever the rain stops) and judging by how my ducklings (to say nothing of my 9 pullets!) go through water, we'd need some kind of pond, right?

Oh, and there's my hubby to deal with.

He wondered why I got ducks in the first place so soon after getting chickens -I guess he doesn't know how the addiction works!

So do you have any thoughts or suggestions? Am I suffering from "champagne taste on a beer budget?" or some variation of a big heart and no brain?

If it were me, I would go get them. But them I am a softy at heart when it comes to babys. As far as the hubby goes, here is what I do. I get what I want and then say "look dear what I got today". He just shakes his head & goes about his way. LOL

Well, Pekins get big, and ducks are messy, but those poor babies need to be rescued!

We have two buffs (drake and duck) and a Cayuga, plus seven precious ducklings! Not to mention the gorgeous mixed breed rooster and three ladies! We have one acre and have sectioned off an area for the ducks that's about 40 feet by 10 feet. (The chickens are in a tractor my hubbie made.) We give them a kiddie pool to play in and then empty it out 'cause they get it nasty fast! They do well with a good water supply and small hutches. We actually have both ducks broody right now!

So, get those babies and you may be able to find some of them homes after they get bigger! Good luck!

Yes, you have a big heart and should be proud of yourself for being so kind and caring. If at all possible I would go back and rescue them and maybe once they're a lil' older you could always see about selling them or giving them away to good homes...it's a chance but worth it I say.

Good luck and let us know if you got them!

That's what I've been doing so far.

He does the same thing with music equipment -so neither of us have hobbies that are easy to hide, lol!

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone! I just had an emergency come up with my littlest Magpie duckling, but I'm still seriously thinking about taking on the Pekins. Wish me luck and I'll keep you posted (and no doubt pester you with more questions

I would definitely rescue them. Even if it turns out you are just housing them for a bit until you can find them a nice, happy home with people who will take care of them.

Sometimes I hate people. Regardless of the fact that they are meat birds or not, no animal should be treated like that. I think we should stuff them all in a teensy cage and stick 'em in the baking hot sun! <insert your favourite expletive here> idiots!

You made me think of a bumper sticker I once saw, it said, "Mean People Suck!" ... And I couldn't agree more!

Oh, and that brings me to another bumper sticker I saw just recently, it said, "Please Don't Litter - Spay or Neuter Your Pet!" (that alone is another topic so don't even get me started on that) ...

lol ... Have a great day!

these are the kind of things that reminds me that being vegan is all the more worth while. I think that it is wonderful that you are willing to help the poor babies.

My favorite is "I hate stupid people." That is what everyone in the kitchens get to hear me grumbling about at work.
