Can/should I use lime and DE in my coop?

I've seen things that said I should put lime down before I put down anything else (when using the deep litter method) but then I've also read here on the forum that using DE is really beneficial for smell and insects....So, what is the purpose of putting lime down and can I use the two in combination with each other? Lime down first, then wood shavings or hay etc, then DE...?

Thanks for all your help,

Tanya

I've never used lime. I use the DE in my deep litter method coop. Seems to work great. I always sprinkle the DE on top of the shavings and hay (I use both). By the time they get done scratching around looking for the treats I throw around, they work the DE in just fine. It definitely cuts down on the smell and I've never had any problems with lice on the birds. Oh, I also dust their nest boxes with DE as well.

Sorry I couldn't give any info. on the lime.
