I was just curious if this was a acceptable trait. I was looking at my splash I hatched out a couple weeks ago and it has a single comb.

I had a couple with missing toes too and I have heard this is a very bad trait to breed in? Would it eventually breed out? This is such a bummer. I think I'm done with Silkies, at least with this line.

Straight Comb is a fault. DQ. It makes them a definite pet quality. I remember on the other BYC their was a young ladie who only wanted straight comb silkiess.

What a shame, I know you paid top dollar for those potential show quality eggs too. Just goes to show pick and choose who to trust very carefully. I would definitely stay away from whatever line those came from if your looking for good quality chicks. so sorry! That is so frustrating!
That's what makes it so hard for me to be able to cough up big chunks of money for shipped eggs, when you never really know what your getting.
Good luck Christina, hope you find a better line for spring time!! I have seen some of Bama's chickens they look good!

They would make nice pets for someone who isnt trying to perfect there flocks.

Countrygirl, when you say they have missing toes, do you mean they have parts or all of their toes missing, or they only have 4 toes instead of 5 toes like Silkies are supposed to have?

Not countrygirl but....
Some of them hatched with 4 toes instead of 5, (the way they should be 5 toes each foot) and now one she kept (splash) is showing a single comb.
Has to be so frusterating!

I should of been more clear. They are missing their fifth toe.

I know that is a DQ when you show.

Thanks for the kind words Terra. This is so frustrating.

Being the original egg killer it was really a downer to finally get a hatch and have them hatch with awesome type and such awful colors they were shipped off to pet land not to breed again .. Single combs carry strong --I hope your eggs from Bama all hatch ---- it takes along time to put together breeding stock that can hatch excellant quality everytime -
there are alot of breeders that breed even if they know a 4 toe or 6 toe will hatch every few chicks cuz the 5 toes are very excellant this should be explained same as mixed colors which can be popular and really pretty- but for limited space people like me ,I just don't have room.
think the worse were the Buff eggs I had shipped to Judy - 6 out of 6 hatched not one Buff silkie not one -- look at the bright side your better at hatching then me--- that can always cheer people up I haven't killed as many as Shari
