navigate a ramp up into their coop or do they need an coop entrance at ground level?

They do just fine with ramps.

Mine took a little teaching but she's figured out the ramp nicely now. I put her on the base and put my arms out on both sides of her so she couldn't jump off and she had nowhere to go but up.
