Can someone help a newbie with a chick-raising question?

Thanks for the GREAT advice everyone!!

I'm thinking of getting them from a feed store because I only want three chicks and can't find anyone who can ship me one chick of each of the three breeds I want. Everywhere else I've looked into for chicks seems to require minimum orders...

And I don't have anyone who can watch them as closely as I know I would.

Maybe I'll call the feed store and see if they'll be getting another shipment of chicks.... I called 4 feed stores before I found one with the breeds I've been hoping for.

We never go away - why did the wedding have to be right after my impending chick arrival? GAH!

Thanks again for advice!!

If it were me, I would TOTALLY be trying to sneak them in to the wedding!

Hey Kate - did you know that there will be a "chicken swap" on March 28th in Arcadia at the Tractor Supply store? There will be a number of BYCers there with chicks and chickens. Don't know how far away you are, but it will be a lot of fun and you can buy and swap birds.

There is a thread on it - go to the index page and find Chickenstocks, Shows & Swaps and the thread is called "SW Florida Swap Meet". Some of the folks coming have listed what they are bringing.

You should try to come, you never know what you will find there!

I think they'll probably be ok w/petsitting kids 2x a day. I think if it were me I woul try to get the two girls or some other friend with kids to keep them at their house for a week. specially since there will only be 3, it won't be as smelly and as much of a cleaning burden as it would if there were a bunch of chicks, you know?

Did you try Mypetchicken.com? They do small orders and have many breeds.

Finding someone to take them to their house is the best option as I'd be worried
about the heat lamp on that much while you are gone.

Good Luck!

I think my husband has actually agreed to taking these chickens with us to the wedding. Yeah - really. So our car will have us, two kids, one german shepherd and a box of chicks. Wow... it's a wedding on a beautiful barrier island off the coast of Florida so won't we look like the Clampetts showing up with this carload? LOL. Wow... I can't believe we're actually considering this.

I've had to think about this as well. Mine are being shipped the 25th March and then we go to my Grandmothers for Easter. So they will be 2weeks old and I just figure if my DH goes with us then I'll have to take the chickens/ducks as well otherwise if he stays home, he'll be in charge of them. If DH goes and my Father doesn't, then I'll deliver them for him to care for. They are baby chicks, who doesn't want to watch over baby chicks?!?!?!

I would think you would be fine leaving if someone is checking them twice a day. As long as the "chick sitter" knows they have to clean up daily and feed/water them you should be just fine! My advise: GO ON VACATION! Enjoy yourself! The chicks will be fed, warm and watched over.
