Black X Black - 100% Black
Blue X Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Splash, 25% Black

Black X Blue = 50% Blue, 50% Black
Splash X Splash = 100% Splash
Black X Splash = 100% Blue
Splash X Blue = 50% Splash, 50% Blue

but what happens if i breed a blue to a lavender? What about a splash to a lavender? or a buff to a blue? has anyone had experience with breeding Orpingtons with colors that you "aren't supposed to" breed? Any photos?

Good question!
I have blues that have gold leakage on the areas they're supposed to be black...the rooster's hackle feathers and the shading on the hens heads and necks is more of brownish goldish rather than black. I've always imagined it's from a buff somewhere in the gene pool., becaue I saw the breeding stock and it was a blue rooster over black hens.

The goldish color is not from buff and is caused by a number of other possibilities.

blue x lavender = some black and some blue
splash x lavender = blue
buff (as in orpington) x blue = adult plumage buff anterior end and black posterior end other adult plumage will be buff anterior end and blue posterior end
