Can someone tell me what the open coop method is?

You would never have a fire from ventilation fans overloading. You would never have to worry about chickens suffocating. There are pros and cons but ultimately it is a personal decision, there is no one coop design that fits all situations.

I'm in a mild climate here I actually have to get more air in for the girls in summer and have a flap at the back that I open for them at night to keep them cool. Its so humid here and in winter the lowest temp would be about 44.6 ºF (7 degrees celcius) It doesn't snow here and we don't get frosts. Its 80.6 ºF here today thats not that hot but the humidity is up at 70%.

There is no "the open coop method", there are just various ways of having the coop be mostly open-air. All sorts of different versions, depending on your location and weather and chickens and number of chickens and so forth and so on.

It needn't at all deprive chickens of a place to get out of the rain -- especially if the coop is larger than "tiny".

It also is not unreasonable in Northern locations with very cold winters; you just have to be able to close things up well enough for wintertime that the chickens do not get drafts on them or overly cold. Lynne, you should be going on about your fave "huddle box" thing here, not saying it can't be done!!!

Again, it is not "a" "method". Do what makes sense for the details of your own situation.

There are quite a few folks here in AZ with open coops... at times I wish I would have done it that way. It just gets real HOT here for a couple months of the year.
