I’ve done a LOT of researching on sour crop over the past month due to having a pretty extreme case on one of my hens. After some weeks, I’ve finally got her all better and back to her normal self, but now my other girl has started showing sour crop symptoms - just today she bent down to pick up a mealworm and I saw liquid come out of her mouth, then felt her crop and it had the telltale water balloon, squishy feel and I could hear sloshing around as I massaged it.

This particular girl is very hardy and has never had any health issues. Nothing has changed in terms of environment etc. I did just finish a round of dewormer which was given via medicated crumble that I had softened in water to make into a mash - I changed it over daily during treatment and cleaned the bowls overnight. The other thing is that it’s extremely hot here at the moment, around 100F. Although that’s not uncommon for the summers here, and she’s never had issues before.

What could cause my other hen to get sour crop?!

What's their diet?
Layer pellets which are given unlimited. They also free range majority of the time so they’re eating lots of grass (which is short and mowed - not long/fibrous) and little bugs. I also have live mealworms I feed often as treats
