my 8 month old hen appears to have respiratory illness. she was open mouth breathing, lethargic and eating very little, but drinking well. took her to the vet and had an xray because we thought it could of been other things as well. xray was good, fecal was negative. yesterday her crop stopped emptying. very large and full of water. I massaged her crop and water was spilling out of her beak, I tipped her and she vomited most of the water out. second time, 2 large blobs of mucus also came out of her crop. I started her on baytril the day before the vet visit and the vet also gave her tetracyline for her water. I read somewhere that not supposed to be given together? does anyone have knowledge of those two antibiotics given at the same time? I will be calling her to confirm. for the most part she has stopped the open beak breathing, but still not eating and lethargic. I did give her 3 mls of molasses water and few different times yesterday. she had some solid in her poops last night. poops mostly liquid yellow on the thicker side before the molasses water. she has been on the antibiotic now for 3 days.

Tetracycline can be used in Chickens. I have used Tetracycline Soluble Power at 25mg/lb bird body weight, in daily drinking water for a week or two. DISCARD any unused drinking water, and mix a new solution daily....

I would not use Baytril, I believe it was banned from poultry use in 2005....
Good luck, hope she feels better....💝

Unless your vet instructed you to use both only use the tetracycline. You have to be very careful with antibiotics not just for interactions, but they completely obliterate any good bacteria as well. Make sure you give a probiotic after you finish the course of antibiotics.

Evelyn passed away thursday in my arms. apparently she had EYP, severe salphinglitis, e coli infection. disappointed the vet didnt catch that on the xray. i believe in baytril. it has helped my hens in the past. yes, i understand they are afraid of antibiotic resistance in humans, but i do not give their eggs away.
