Can they drink from a bowl on the ground?

A slightly larger bucket around the small, insulated one will solve any picking at the insulation. Just cut the bottom out. Heck, get an old 5-gallon paint pail and cut a ring from it. It won't touch the water so it doesn't have to be food safe.

Temp now is 5F. I went out there and both nipples are flowing and water is not frozen. So I guess this works well. Chickens got bored with pecking it so I'm not worried about it.
