Baby quail hatched this morning. Can’t stand. It moves all over the place. It was a late hatch and the legs seem contracted. The legs appear fully formed. I have trie to gently move legs and baby retracts them. I tried to kind a hold him up to help him move. Can this chick be saved

It looks like possible riboflavin (B2) deficiency. Try some Save a Chick vitamins or better, some Poultry Cell or human vitamin B complex tablets crushed into water. I would definitely treat with vitamins, but make sure they have riboflavin B2. Even baby vitamins (polyvisol without iron has that.)

I did dissolve some vit b in water.

and tried sling but the chick is so light it could pull feet back up

buton closer inspection I don’t think it’s legs are made right. I can not straighten it’s legs at all. The toes don’t move at all. The other two chicks that pipped did not survive. i Compared their legs which were movable. There Were temp problems with thermometer being inaccurate so my first hatch was a bust. It makes me sad.

what is most humane was to cull a chick

Sorry about the chick and your others who died. Leg and foot issues are very common with temperature or humidity problems in incubators. If the legs won’t extend, it may be best to dull it. With baby chicks using scissors or pruning shears to remove the head is the quickest method. Unfortunately culling chicks is part of incubating. I have had to do it myself.

I bought an accurite thinking I was doing goo. It was 5 degrees off from other thermometer So I had no idea which was Right or closest. Then when I read others posts realized I should have gotten one that calibrates but that was at day 14 that I bought second thermometer. This forum has been very educational. One that can be calibrated is a must Before another incubation
