Can we...

Same here. The chicks are the "babies", the two layers are "the girls" or "the red girls". I usually refer to each as the breed. Like "The polish" are out back. Or "I just fed the Orps".

The only two that even have names were named by my husband. Our Black project Orp is Boykin and the little white mix chick is Lucinda.

I enjoy my chickens, but they are livestock. I don't have that kind of affection for them. My children, Liz and Alex, are my babies. One of which just turned 16 today!!!

I don't think it's wrong for people to make that connection, It's just not my cup of tea.

Can we...
...figure out a way to refer to chicks other than "my babies?" We aren't chicken 'mothers' or 'fathers', we are chicken 'owners.'

You can refer to your birds any way you like and I will refer to my birds any way I like.
I refer to them *collectively* as 'my chicken-children' --- even the cockerels that I know will be butchered and eaten at some point.

Why would what other people call their chicks bother you?

Personally I don't see what it matters.

If I want to call them my babies, my chickies, my whatever, it's up to me or whoever. It in no way makes them more important than my children, who are my babies. Call them what ever you like. It doesn't matter to me. I call mine my chickies, the ones that I hatched are called my hatchlings and the duckies are the duckies. I don't look down on those who call them their babies. It's all about personal choice. However, I've noticed that in the past few days, someone is pretty grumpy about others choices.

It comes from sitting in a small room with artificial light and staring at a computer screen at very early hours in the morning.

I refer to my chickens as a as chickens (original, isn't it...

)
Rooster as Rooster cogburn (Roo Cog is his nickname...)
I call my favorite chicken little girl,
I call all my other hens big girls,
And all hens in a group as girls.
Oh... And sometimes I refer to them as a breed, e.g. "the Polish are in the back yard.''

I've taken to calling them "little bits" -- only works while they are small.. but it fits.. sometimes I call them my little whiners.. *LOL*

When I see day old anythings, especially next to one of their "parents" I think of the chicks, ducklings, whatever as their "babies" -- heck, I even use that term when I am talking about plant seedlings, bitty frogs...

and sometimes? When I see a tiny ball of dust next to a big ball of dust...
