It's not so much that they refer to them as "babies," its the endless anthropomorphism that sends me plumb over the edge.

And really folks he's close now...Back away slowly, no sudden moves or you might startle him to attack....be very, very quiet....

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Why let it bother you? Even if people do call them their babies (which I'm sure I've done one time or another), it doesn't mean they're saying they value their chickens over their children!!!

Whew. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I have one chook with a name (the Vulture Bird, what a name, eh?) and the rest I either call by breed/color/other defining characteristic or "the buttons"/the quail or in the case of my coturnix hens who are laying "the girls" when I thank them and tell them "good job", lol. There's a lot of "the goofy looking black one", "the obnoxious one", "the white fluffy thing", "the cinnie roo", "the butcher birds", etc.

The butcher birds...That's amusing, I have "the egg layers" and the 4 U-G-L-Y orps who I remind every time I see them that they are bound for Eugen Aaron Martin's Freezer Camp!! Oh goodness they are ugly!

I refer to my hens as the "ladies in laying". The chicks are the "newbies". Yes they all have names, but as I have two of each type/color I've named them in pairs.

Cagney & Lacey
Tessie & Bessie
Henny & Penny
Ford & Chevy
Tuff & Fluff

As for the dogs they are the tank and the brat.

My babies are my two DD, 21 years & 15 years, and they hate that I still call them my babies, but they always will be!

I too get tired of people thinking of pets as people. I may have named the "ladies in laying", but I'll be eating them when the time comes.

Confessions of an Anthropomorhism Addict

I admit to naming my circular saw "Jacques" and my fancy new drill "Sarah". It makes me giggle, but then I am very very easily amused. My big huge KitchenAid mixer is "Bruno" - I was even contemplating googly eyes in a moment of weakness. I have recently conned my youngest son into making me a little bag out of fake fur, complete with teeth and tail. It will most definitely have a name.

I know it's silly, truly, but I just can't seem to stop!

Forgive me, oh Poulets One!

AngieChick, I've named my car but not general appliances.
Bet I could get DD2 to make me a bag with teeth & tail, too. After she got done making hers when I give her the idea
