because i am quite willing to do so if it is possible. i really don't want this chicken to die.

so do you extract the pieces by hand with a little vasaline?

You can use KY Jelly, insert a finger into the vent and carefully remove any pieces of shell. Take care not to injure the hen with any sharp edges. Once the shell is out, if any tissue has come out of the vent, you can treat it like prolapse. Apply Preparation H, and keep the hen isolated until it heals so that others don't pick at her.

i'm a tad incompitant and can't find the eggshells, but i can feel them from the outside. Any tips?

I'd advise against Preparation H. I had great luck using honey to treat a prolapsed vent. (And I did have to remove some broken shell from that chickens' vent first, which I did by just removing gently with my finger).

I'm not sure what you mean about feeling the broken shell from the outside?

(thanks for everyone's help btw. i love this forum

well, the odd thing is i can feel the shell crackle when i touch her swollen bottom, but when i stick my finger in i can't feel anything. it kind of worried me.

i tried a cool water wash, she just spazzed and it didn't really do anything. my mom said she'd been acting up, trying to pass an egg recently. she also laid a rubber egg this month. maybe i'm not doing this right. i tried soaking her in warm water to lubricate. but again, only excrement and no egg.

also she hasn't got a prolapsed vent, only when i dip her in cool water does it come out.
