Can you find Roosters that won't crow too loud?

Thanks for that bit of information! I will conduct some research on the Salmon favorell and see what I learn.

I have a what looks like Rhode Island Red X that hasn't crowd in months. Knock on wood. It used too crow when I had other roosters but I got rid of the others.

Nerdicus -

We have a 6 year old boxer, too. She has done really well with our chickens. We remain cautious and don't leave her alone with them (afterall, she is dog and they are dinner). But mostly she ignores them. I do not intend to dismiss the experience of this forum. Just sharing...

Good luck to you!

The question isn't about how to get my dog to obey me, our dog is very obedient( I honestly can't stress enough how obedient he really is) and he will learn to deal with the chickens. What I want is a rooster that won't crow for no reason. we used to live next door to a family with some chickens and they had a rooster. It crowed from hours before sunup until evening, and so now we have a thing about hearing them crow too close to home.

So I'm trying to see if there are breeds that are known for being less noisy. By the sounds of it it is more about the individual rooster rather then breed...but if anyone does know of a silent rooster breed, let me know!

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

My Rhode Island Red Rooster has a nice crow but I live in a semi suburban area and I wish he would crow less. I have been toying with the idea of fitting him with a figure eight harness and one of those bark control collar units. It would shock him when he crows. I am hoping a bit of that will cut down his vocalizations but I have never heard of anyone trying this before. I have to make the harness out of bungee cords, like a figure eight, and put them over his back, around each wingpit with the unit centered on his back. I would rather shock him a few times than have to eat him as he is quite a nice bird. No one has complained about him but I worry. I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of such a thing?

happyfrenchman,

I would very strongly recommend NOT fixing your roo with an electronic devise. Chickens are much more sensitive to electric shock than dogs and do not learn in the same way as dogs. I'm afraid that all you would wind up with is a neurotic, aggressive roo. As a dog trainer, I can tell you, these devises work ok on some dogs and are a terror to others. It would only f*** your roo up.

Well Buglit, Thank you. I was wondering that very thing about the electric shock. I know some animals are more sensitive than others, plus the electrode would have been right over his back which is close to his heart. Birds are pretty smart, you don't think he would make the connection? No matter. I think you are definitely right about the electric device. I just need to move further out into the country so my rooster can do whatever the heck he likes.
