I haven't seen it suggested yet but it's something I'm planning to do with my own run. To reduce the amount of materials I need to build a fully enclosed run I decided to make it 3' tall. I'm not going to be crawling through it so I plan to make a lid. It'll allow me access without having to waste materials.
lol i am only 5'4 so at 3' tall i could still put a gate in to walk in!!
i like the idea of 3' tall....but now after showing quite a few pics to my husband last night he wants one we can walk into! going to be picking up some materials this weekend and hopefully building it next week while he is off for the week. Eek!
I'm not sure what your coop dimensions are but the lid thing works for me because it's a narrow 3'x3'x10' run. I can make the entire top side a lid. With something wider I'm not sure this solution would be as viable.
Here is my run going in. This is the one I referred to on the first page of the thread that will be 20x27 when it's finished. The coop portion will be inside the barn with an access door to the run for them. It is 6 feet tall at the shortest point, and taller than that under the highest portion of the roof. I don't remember the exact height there. That is only half the roof. The concrete will be partially roofed also, but we didn't that structure put up yet. I am hoping we can have this finished in a few more weeks.
We got sidetracked with a different project - a dog kennel because my dog ran into my neighbor's yard and killed 3 of their chickens!!!
He has never harmed a chicken or a cat on this farm, but he went next door and killed their chickens. I was absolutely horrified. We found out late on Monday night, so last night we went out and bought a chain link dog run that is 11x12 and we installed it, so now the punk will be locked up always if he's outside.
So with that done, we can get back to the chicken run.
gorgeous! one of these years i am going to move more into the mountains here and never have to stress room for my chickens again...as God as my witness ya'll!
