Can you help me give Sonja her last few meals?

Please don't get mad at me - but - here is another case of someone who loves an animal so much that she doesn't want to see it die and prolongs its suffering - when you actually think about it - we are really discussing the person's feeling and not the chickens - the best and most honorable thing to do is cull the chicken - it had a good life - all chickens must die sometime - I'm sorry that it is sick - JoePa

Are you saying that I should cull my peafowl when they get sick instead of tube feeding them while they're getting medication?

Nope - ain't saying that - you know what I mean - depends what they are sick from - a lot of diseases get spread around because people don't cull ( kill) the sick bird - and it makes it difficult for others who have chickens -

I agree that if one has a terminally ill bird that it should be humanely euthanized. However, if it's terminally ill with an infectious disease, like Marek's, the flock has already been exposed, so culling probably won't help the flock, especially if they were all living in a coop/pen together, drinking out of the same water, eating from the same food dish, etc.

Firehog, I feel for you, I really do. Is there anywhere that you could take her for to be euthanized? Some low cost spay/neuter clinics will do it for free.

When my hen was at the end of her days I chopped up a got dog wiener into tiny pieces and set them down in front of her. She had not taken water, stayed facing the corner inside the coop and the second day of giving her 3 little pieces a day, the next thing I saw as hard to believe! She came out of the coop and started drinking water and enjoyed another week in the yard with all of her friends! Strange but true.

She survived the night.  She fell off her box once and i put her up on it right away.  I am sleeping on a mattress on the floor next to her so i can hear it if she falls, but it is only 8' high and there is carpet so she will not get hurt.  She ate a little water soaked bread this morning and about 20 sunflower kernels.

My last chicken died the same way and they really hate it when you open their beaks to give them water so i feel if they have the strength to stand, they can drink water if offered to them up close so they don't have to stoop down.  At least it is not hot so they need a lot of water right now and she obviously is no longer laying eggs which requires a lot more water.

take an eye dropper and rub it lightly back and forth from tip to corner of her beak, the water will go in her mouth and she will swallow. I am nursing a silkie back to health after my rabbit attacked her and tore a 1 inch chunk out of her rump, severed her wing where it meets the body and nearly slit her throat. she is now refusing to eat too, but I've found that canned mixed veggies are her new favorite, they are soft and easy to eat. good luck!
I would give

X2. Mine love bread and cake. Why not?
