Can you help me with my son's stomach issues?? *Update*

OK, so he had his doctor appointment today. He took blood and urine and is going to run tests. He set us up for a Barium swallow thing on Monday morning. I also have to keep a journal of what he eats, how well he sleeps, any stressful events, stomach complaints, etc. We'll see him again next week after the Barium thing, and bring the journal. He said there are many possible causes and he seemed very intent on figuring this mystery out.

Just a quick update...he had the Barium Swallow/Upper GI thing, and the GI doc said everything looked good, just minor reflux. With his tone of voice, it seemed like he didn't think this was an issue at all. So we went back to his Ped, and he thought the reflux was causing his pain, so he prescribed Prevacid. He said it should work within a couple days, and call back in a week if it's not helping.

I went to fill the prescription and they said it would be $152

(Our insurance is great for regular medical stuff, but the prescription coverage is kinda weird, only a small discount at the pharmacy but better if you use the mail-order part.) Anyways, I asked the doc if we could use something besides the $152 Prevacid, especially if we're not sure it will help, and he said Prilosec OTC is the same class of drug, for $10...much better

. Now he's been on Prilosec for almost a week and it's not helping at all. Grrrrrrrrr. I guess I'll read through all of your responses again, and take notes to discuss with the doctor. I really didn't think it was reflux from the beginning, and I don't really like the idea of using acid blockers, but I was willing to see if the meds would help.

Stomach trouble is the pits, and i have read so much anti-heartburn medication, you don't know what to believe. . . but if he is showing signs of acid reflux at his age already, watch him for more problems down the road. Vinegar is suppose to be a miracle worker for acid reflux. . .and i think the advice everyone here told you is wonderful. . .I would also not rule out a chiropractor. They don't crack bones, and a lot of them don't even do that kind of adjustment anymore . . .its absolutely amazing what they can do for stomach disorders. I worked for a couple of doctors for over a year, and I saw it. Migraine headaches, trying to get pregnant, you name it, I saw people walk out with BIG smiles on their faces because for the first time (sometimes in their whole life) they had relief. If nothing else, it makes your happy juices flow!!!

I have severe acid reflux- Protonix is the best thing I've ever used. In between if I have an espisode I mix one tablespoon of baking soda in a coffee cup full of cold water and drink it kinda fast - works much better than rolaids. Also the Zantac has always worked pretty well for me. You can get it at dollar General for about $ 3. I think the name is ratadine or something like that - anyway look on the label where it says compare to the ingredients in ZAntac. I've used those two you mentioned before and also pepcid and never had much luck with those. YOu may have trouble getting him to take the baking soda- tastes kind of nasty, but works really fast !!! But it's only temporary relief until the acid builds back up . Try the zantac if you can't get the protonix- Two over the counter zantacs equals 1 prescription strenghth. Hope the little fellow finds something to help him. This reflux stuff makes you miserable.
