Don't worry. Her mom and dad will not let her keep the chickens inside. I directed them to BYC. I also told them they need a 10' by 8' or 10' by 10' coop and a 8' by 20' run. That should give 3 hens plenty of room shouldn't it? That's the number of hens that they want.

I have a pair of Seramas in a big dog crate in my house. I have quail in other big parrot cages. I don't leave the Seramas in there all the time, they're let out to run around the room the crate is in when I'm home. The cage has shavings on the bottom that are swept out every two days and replaced.

They're doing fine. They'll go out into a run this spring, but they'll be back indoors next fall/winter.

Don't see what the big deal is.

They make some huge wire crates these days, and mine is bigger than several commercial coops I've seen.

Why is her idea self centered?
People keep chickens in apartments in NYC.
Do you think they have a large coop on their fire escapes and free range at Central Park during the day? I met a girl the other day that has a BO in her dorm room. The chicken is in a large cage while she attends classes. She got the hen as a day old and it is her pet. So she brought her with her to college.

My house rabbits are in cages and get free time nightly. But even then they are confined to their play pen.
And if my city tells me I cant keep my pet hens I am sure as heck not getting rid of them. They will be moved into my basement and have outdoor time when I am home to hustle them back inside if needed.

The broody poop has a rank odor, definitely. It reminds me of snake poop. I think snake poop, which is similar to bird poop, is processed slower because the snake has a slow metabolism and they also eat mice. Just from observation I've noted the broody hens evacuate less frequently than non-broody hens, so I'm thinking that their poop resembles the snakes (in odor) because of being inside the body longer. Maybe it's more toxic. I don't know.

I have silkies in the house. They live in a refrigerator box on its side.
plastic table cloth or black plastic bags down first, then flat cardboard,
then newspapers, then shavings. I clean it out every few days.
The side of the box has a large cut out window, where I taped a large window screen to the box. so they can see out and watch the family and we watch them. the top of the box is open too.
I replace the box as needed.
