Can you love them too much?

When you say, "go out"--are the chicks outside? We always keep a brooder pen(larg rubbermaid bin inside, lined with paper towels, heat lamp on one side, adnd fresh food and water for then for the first 3-4 weeks before we ever move them out to the chick pen(also has a heat lamp and is away from drafts or cold temps. Just trying to think why you're losing them. I also give them a little sugar water. Good luck!

Loss of some chicks via the mail deliveries is common....once they are settled in, it is okay and actually good to handle them! My four children were ecstatic as well and ours have been held daily since we brought them home 2 1/2 weeks ago....the more attention and the more they are handled the friendlier they will be...just remember they are babies and they need to eat drink and sleep as well....all in moderation! Our have handled the attention from my 4 children very well....one has even taken it upon herself to get attention if she feels she isn't getting enough! She will fly up onto the side of the brooder box and then jump on whomever happens to be sitting in the recliner that is next to the box and then she plants herself there!!! Too funny! Enjoy, I know we certainly are!!!!!!

O.Wendell Douglas :

Thanks for the great replies everybody. I'm scared to go check the death toll this morning. Maybe they're recovering...Now I have to learn how to post pictures in here, that's my next project.

You might consider putting Pedialyte (electrolyte solution for dehydration in babies) in their water. Also, Nutra Drench is a quickly absorbed 'pick me up' that gets nutrients into their systems almost immediately. Use it in very small doses for only a couple of days just to get them over any shipping distress. Jeffers carries it if your local feed store doesn't. Feed them a wet mash (water and chick crumbles), it's easier to consume and digest than dry crumbles right now. Good luck!
