I've got Rhode Island Reds on the way & we're considering adding meat birds to the order (Buckeyes). Since they're supposed to have different percentages of protein, can you mix the feeds or give the birds one or the other?

Several people here have mentioned they feed with no regard to the feed percentages ... very confusing!

:frow What brand name feed do you purchase or are you planning to purchase?
I will show you the differences of the layer feed vs the feed that is meant to be fed to meat birds, so you can see for yourself the exact differences, not just the protein amount. Feeding different type of birds is a little more than just the protein amount.

Purina sells this for meat birds:

You can feed this to both your laying hens and meat birds BUT you will need to add a calcium supplement for the laying birds, in a separate dish on the side. Not mixed with the feed.

The above linked feed is the green highlighted feed below along with 2 feeds made for chicks and 2 feeds made for laying hens.

Thanks ... our chickens are supposed to be here 6/13, so we've got plenty of time to get ready. I ordered covered cat litter boxes yesterday and we're going to start building a frame for them. The rest should be "easy" (famous last words!)
