they are almost the same size they only get to be 1 pound at the most, they are the smallest of all chickens

Well, you aren't supposed to put quail and chickens together due to risk of disease. That being said, if you want to risk that you could certainly try it, though it probably wouldn't work. I have a pair of Serama in a pen with my Birmingham Roller pigeons. The pigeons are the same size as the Serama but the Serama are bullies...pulling feathers and just being all-around terrors. I would think the Serama would beat up the quail.

I have raised button quail and serama chicks together. They did okay until the buttons started coming into their hormones, then they started being bullies to the Seramas

Yes, that is a good idea to keep them together as quail are mostly monogamous; you would require way more males to partner with each female quail, but if you replace all the male quail with one serama rooster, he will look after and partner with all the female quail because roosters are not monogamous.

I do have quail with my serama. The pen needs to be large with hiddy-holes for the quail to go. My serama are quite nonaggressive and the hens accept the quails presence. The rooster, does peck at them and even attempts breeding. I would not recommend putting the two species in the same cage/pen/aviary.

This thread is 10 years old.

Coturnix, one of the more commonly kept quail, are not monogamous, and require 1 male to 3-5+ females to prevent over breeding. Many new world quail like bobwhites are more likely to pair, but they will not pair with a chicken, and they will not be likely to share a mate. There are several diseases that tend to be mild or show no symptoms in chickens, but will kill your quail. Putting them together is a risk for a lot of reasons.
