Today is my 2nd day of being a new chicken mom. We picked up our babies yesterday; 2 Dominques, 2 Rhode islanders and 1 Welsummer ( we have an Easter egger on the way). So any hoo, I got them settled into their brooder and it was like off to the races to the feed bowl! I just sat back to watch, i was alittle afraid to touch them because it was an hour long car ride, we are new to them and well... babies. I didnt want to add to their stress and make anyone sick. So back to watching. All of a sudden i realized i had one of the rhoadies sitting in my hand! Oh my!!!! After a few minutes she went off. (I ended up naming her Yogi because she stretches a wing and a leg out and kinda dances lol) but alas that was the end of chicks playing with momma, everyone got skittish after that..it kinda broke my heart a little .

Then it came to today.......while cleaning their box i was able to handle and play with everyone on a blanket in our spare bedroom. Yogi ended up grooming my hair then curling up in the crook of my arm falling asleep. Her sister , Whisper, sat quiet as could be just watching then finally walked on to my arm and snuggled into my shoulder. Then Dixie, the 2 day old komikazee nut Welsummer bird came running and cannon balled us so that she could sleep in the middle lol.

Now i just need the Domiques to fall in. They did slowly come around towards the end of clean up time. Sweet pea let me hold heart against my heart and fall asleep and her sister Fancy ended up burrowing into my armpit for a snooze. Great photo op but unfortunately, no hands! So in less then 24 hours i'm now truly smitten and look forward to playing with my chicks and watching each one grow out her own personality

Aww....your babies sound adorable! I am glad you are enjoying them and they are warming up to you. Some chicks take a while to not be afraid of the BIG HAND! LOL

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about your new little ones, feel free to ask around the forums.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

You will have so much fun watching the babies grow into the egg laying chickens. If you keep playing with them they will begin to trust you more and understand you as part of their life. And yes... falling in love under 24 hours is possible with nice fluffy chickens!

Hi and welcome to our community!

So glad you could join BYC! Congratulations on the beginning of your chicken keeping adventures. Bringing home new baby chicks can be so exciting and addicting! Sounds like you chose a lovely variety of chicks. Rhode Island Reds, Welsummers, and Dominiques should be excellent layers (and you'll get nice chocolate colored eggs from the Welsummer).

Chicks certainly love snuggling! I know that my first four chicks used to love sitting on my lap and sleeping in my hands, especially my Columbian Wyandotte. That's probably why she became my favorite chicken!

Welcome to our flock and I hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do! Good luck with your babies.
