can you train a goose?

Yes Jesse says Momma Bye Bye and here kitty kitty. You keep repeating what you say and they repeat it. He also knows which neighbors will talk back to him and which ones ignore him. Geese are very smart birds. Usually frozen peas and cherrios are good treats to give to teach them tricks.

Neither did one of my friends from church, until she brought me home and my feathered son was screaming Momma Momma. She says "Sarah! tell me you did not teach that bird to say momma"
The neighbor cats play in my yard all the time so I call them here kitty kitty especially when they stare too hard at my gardens. Next thing I know I hear him say it. Bye bye was easy. Every time I left anywhere I would say Bye Bye and he has learned to say bye bye back. If you look up Nancy Townsend you read how she taught one to even play a kid piano. I have her book and love it!!!

When it was time for Bed, I would just call out Goosie, Goosie bed time and they would all come single file.

geese do get to know your voice.

I agree that they are smarter than most people would think. Mine think I am their momma so they pay attention to me more than anyone else. Sometimes when they get too far away I will call to them and they certainly don't run home but they head this way. They perk right up when they hear my voice.

I have found geese can be trained to come to you like you train dogs-with food. The geese, however come faster! I use (ONLY WHOLE GRAIN) bread, apples or greens. All my geese come when I yell "ZEENA"!, because she was my first goose and is the matriarch of the clan. One trained goose will teach the others-they are competitive animals! You have to get them to like a certain food first, then work from there. I can't stress how useful this is to do! I have had several times that my geese coming when called has saved their lives! Tornadoes, fox and eagles to name a few!
