can you use mulch as litter in the chicken run?

can you use mulch as litter in the outside run? will it absorb well, has anyone tried this. i don't want to use pine shavings because they are too small and very light weight that when they scratch around it goes everywhere.

No matter what you use outside it will compost and become messy eventually. I have tried everything from mulch and wood shavings and even gravel..I have resorted to leaving the run dirt due to the fact that any mulch makes for a poopy mess. Gravel was worse, when the mud hit it in the spring it was a nasty mud filled gravel pit. Id love ideas too
