Can you use pine chips or sand for coop and run bedding?????

Thanks alot!
I just learned about DE in my biology class!
What is the difference in food grade and the other?
Also, did someone say on here that you can put some types in swimming pools?

Owning,
1 lab, 6 chickens, 1 cat, 4 kittens, phantom mouse, 3 snails, 2 hermit crabs, a soon to be cow, and a wannahave horse.

I'm new to all this too, haven't even started working on my coop, just have an idea, but....the electric company in my area is now working on trimming back trees around their service cables and the wood chips are free! Is there any reason why I couldn't use wood chips in my coop? The hens will have a grass run (for awhile!) and I plan to let them in the backyard for a few hours a day too!

I asked pretty much the same question before on here. You can use wood chips, NO CEDAR! Cedar causes breathing problems. Wood chips do rot and smell. Sand is good for drainage. We get ALOT of rain in the spring and early summer, so,I'm not sure I want to use sand OR wood chips.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best kind of bedding to use in a outdoor coop and run???
