Can You Worm Broody Chicken?

I have a Co chins that she coughs any time she eats.she acts like something is stock in her throat. Her poo smells very badly, I wanted to worm her but she is broody now.should i go ahead with it?

Yes, you can. You can buy Fenbendazole wormer in the form of SafeGuard wormer paste for horses at the feedstore. I would suggest worming her with that in case her coughing has something to do with gapeworms. It's a good safe wormer. Use a BB sized piece in the beak. Repeat in 6 weeks. It won't effect her chicks.

Also because she has diarrhea, it's possible the babies are picking up her bad bacteria from the droppings. Give them all a treat of plain yogurt or another type of probiotic (which contain live bacteria).

I'd worm your entire flock so that they'll all be on the same schedule and because, if it is gapeworm, they'll all be exposed. Just don't worm the chicks or anything under 3 months in my opinion.

You could also clean out her system prior to giving the probiotics and AFTER giving the wormer - in fact I'd highly suggest that. Try a little babyfood applesauce (1 teaspoon), a tiny bit of molasses (less than an 1/8th teaspoon - just a few drops), a little yogurt, and a little bit of cooked oatmeal. Give to only the mama. If she doesn't eat it, that's ok - if she does it will help cleanse her digestive system after the worming to help flush ou the worms. The applesauce cleanses, the molasses (which you don't want to use much of) flushes, the oatmeal she'll like, the yogurt replaces good bacteria to reduce diarrhea.

If you see worms passing from her, then be sure to worm the babies when they're old enough with Wazine 17 (piperazine 17) and then with fenbendazole/safeguard when they're 4 months or so.
