Do you have a wildlife rehabilitator or a swan goose sanctuary in your area? In the UK there is community education so the public will feel empowered to help, heal and release injured wildlife, but in North America we keep the public ignorant and frighten them with rules and regulations so nobody thinks they can do the right thing. You did the right thing in helping and you know it inside. Feed whole corn and lettuce, and a bit of bread for a treat. It might like your chicken scratch too. Keep it safe and enclosed because it will be vulnerable to predators if it tries to escape in that condition.Maybe you know an avian vet who could check the wing?

Clint what would you have done just walked away and let the goose die?

Yes, not worth the fines and legal fees if caught. You would loose you sales and disposal permit if you have one or ever want one. I believe it is a child.. ..forget a job in the wildlife field. Cruel.. ...maybe. ...but not worth the consequences. I have worked with agents and saw how good intentions have deckerated families.

Clint

First...no guarntee the goose will die. ...many survive.. ..

You´re right there about the UK. Anyone can keep a wild bird if it´s obviously in need of protection, but most people love to see them free and try to rehabilitate them. Here in Brazil, too, it´s illegal to keep wild birds caged, but if there´s one that would suffer by being left in the wild, or returned there, it´s not a problem to keep it. But a lot of people here look after them until they´re well, then let them hang around the place. I know of two toucans that wouldn´t be able to survive in the wild due to injuries, and live free but in someone´s garden, and a lame guam that lives either in my place or my neighbour´s, it just makes itself right at home here among the geese! Funny.
Sad about the States. I´ve read some very upsetting stories along these lines. It makes people frightened to help animals in distress.

The guam is the black bird on the turkey´s perch above the turkey. The turkey did a dance, you can see him in the pic, the guam called its bluff, and the pair of them were dancing about for a while, then the turkey did a Karate drop-kick and the guam took off. I tried to put the video on, but the internet´s too slow. This guam´s the male, I´m sure. The female is the one that hurt her leg somehow.
