hi, I am just venturing into the world of soapmaking, and am at a loss as to where to buy lye. Any ideas?

You may have already found a source, but I just noticed your thread. I found lye once at an old style hardware store. A more reliable Canadian source though is Canwax. http://www.canwax.com/
They also have great supplies and scents. A huge hit for us is the Muskoka Boathouse - it really does make you think of Ontario cottage country.
