Hello.

I have my acre. I have my garden started. I have started gathering building materials for a coop with sled. I've been reading about sleds/tractors. I'm learning about chickens. I'm getting ready to become a chicken owner. I'm both excited and nervous. Nothing needs to happen sooner than I am ready. I've never cared for an animal. Hmmm... rather unusual for a 58 year old. Should I be embarrassed? Perhaps I should wait for a feral chicken to come into my life. Now I am wondering just how unusual this is, to be so old and never have been a pet owner, or farm animal owner. Other members in my households have been pet/animal owners. I am sure it does not count. I was never the care taker. Oh my gosh!

glad you have joined us and wish you well with planning and obtaining your own flock.

It's never to late to learn the joy of pets, and IMO chickens are so much easier to tend than many other animals you might have selected.

You should explore the learning center articles, there is so much helpful information there.

And you should explore the coop/run sections for ideas.

Good luck with your decisions.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You are not alone; there are lots of people who have lived in cities all their lives, who have never had any pets (not even a cat, dog, or fish). X2 on sunflour; it's never too late to late to start enjoying them, and if you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in building your coop and in getting your flock.)

If you have questions, always feel free to ask. There are a lot of helpful members here to help each other out.

Good for you on getting into animals, like they say "It's never too late"!

Hello Candace! First of all, you're not too old! I say that because we're the same age and I just got two Buckeye chicks this weekend. First time chicken owner myself. Right now I'm living in California but moving to Port Angeles in a couple years. Who knows, we might be chicken buddies by then. I'm getting a lot of great info on this site as well as Fresh Eggs Daily blog.
