Candeling problem

How do you candle an egg without an officail candeler?

I use an LED flashlight with a washer taped over the end to give a small point of light about 8mm across. Or you can use a tin can with one end cut/drilled out and a regular lamp inside.

And how long is does it take for the embryo to be visible by candeling?

Our first one was a shoe box with a hole cut in the bottom for the egg to sit on. We put a strong light underneath to candle. Last month I used my hand as the holder and put a bright flash light in the other side of my hand. I could see well enough to know blanks from viable.
