I usually wait untill day 10 to candle...by then they are more established and if there are any quitters, I usually can see it by then....sorry lilarabookworm! In this situation, patience will really pay off!

I candle at 6 days just because I'm impatient like you library book.

I NEVER discard any eggs until 12 day candle. Also, yes be so careful candling! Funny story is I've always had hens hatch all my babies and sometimes 2 broody's would fight over the eggs. They'd roll them back and forth ALL day, everyday...but! They all hatched!

The overall advice I'll give is: The other posters are right.

I have been candling at three days, and have been able to see growth and all, but now after losing a couple, I am thinking I put them at risk by candling so early. I am now rethinking it all and believe I am going to start waiting till much later to start candling. I am still a newbie and learning - I am on my third hatch - and I see the wisdom in everyone saying to wait.

ok

but it is my weakness
and by the way, my sister and i are always like that. only on the rarest occasions do we get along.

do you think it is better to candle day 7 of closer to day 10?
i want to candle day 7 or 8 but my sister wants to candle day 10

Anyway, I candle earlier. If you absolutely MUST candle here is a pretty safe way. Get a really small, REALLY bright flashlight and put it on top of the egg without removing it from the bator. Trust me, this works quite well. this early you might not see anything. Sometimes you will. By day three I can usually see definite changes in eggs that are developing even if I can't see veins. Even though I candle early I don't throw anything out until day 10 or so, however. Better safe than sorry.
