First time hatching here, have a first time broody hen doing it (no incubator), so I know nothing, at least she has instincts.
First chick on Saturday, another on Sunday afternoon, and woke up early this morning to a third
all very healthy and doing well.
There are still 3 eggs in the nest. Mom is now hopping up to teach babies to eat and drink --so sweet, she is crumbling the food and dropping it in front of them!
Anyway, since these eggs are apparently not all at the same stage, hatching days apart, Should I candle the remaining eggs to see what is up or just leave them in there and let her decide when to abandon them in favor of the hatched peeps?
My inclination is to let nature take it's course, but since we obviously intervened earlier (adding and removing eggs) and she has eggs of different "ages" going on, I feel badly thinking that perhaps some of the other eggs are within days or hours of hatching and would only need a bit more care to survive if she decides to leave them in favor of the chicks.
So, two questions:
1. Do I candle the remaining eggs? what am I looking for (total hatch newbie)?
2. If they do look nearly done and IF she does abandon them, is there a way to finish them without an incubator (heat lamp and damp cloth?) ? I will not try to finish them on my own unless she appears to abandon them.
thanks so much
