Candling help please

Kass, hold onto the last two eggs. If your light is not strong enough, sometimes the embryo is not very clearly seen.
The hot temps we have had also affects the fertility. If the eggs are not collected frequently during the heat of dayand properly stored, then eggs can get too hot.
I actually found a nest of eggs this week that the girls laid and 4 of the nine eggs were already incubating...looked like 3 to 4 day old embryos on the yolk. By bringing them into the house cooled at 72 for several hours, the chicks would have died and shown clear in the incubator.

Thanks Joe. I may have no live eggs then. There are about 3-5 I couldn't see through tonight, I'll put fresh batteries in the light for Fri and make sure I am in a darker room

Kass, as stated, a blood ring isn't because you didn't wash your hands. The egg is laid with a 'bloom' on it from the chickens internal tract. This bloom protects the eggs until it is washed off. The blood ring is a fertile egg that died for any number of reasons, as was stated. I am hoping that your hatch isn't indicative of the whole group. I don't know what the temps are like at the site where they were collected but hopefully there wasn't anything else going wrong along the way. I will let you know how mine candle out this weekend.

I ordered eggs for a second time, different person. At least 1/2 the eggs are bad. I'm really ticked, because it was carelessness. I have 3 eggs infertile and 3 blood rings. I might hatch 4 out of the bunch if I hatch any at all. My first three look like your first picture. I did keep them in and I'll candle again tomorrow just to make sure. Maybe I'm in denial.:(

I'll start over with a more reputable breeder straight from the breeders club next time.

If they stink at all, take them out. You don't need an exploding egg. Last batch I had 1 quitter out of 17 eggs. I didn't catch the blood ring, but oh boy did it smell right through the shell.

After looking at ALL the photos (that I could find) on this forum and on the internet, I have came to the following conclusion.

I do not know how to candle an egg and tell for sure a good egg from a bad egg !!!!!

Therefore, I an not going to candle any eggs. I think the risk of me destroying a good egg is far more than the risk of a bad egg exploding

I think that is the only risk of leaving a bad egg in the incubator for the 21 + 2 days.

Are there any other reason to remove "bad" eggs from the incubator before the 23 days are up that I have not thought about?????

What kind of incubator do you have? What are you using to monitor the temperature and humidity? How precisely are you controlling the humidity and are you increasing from 45% to 60% in the last three days and turning off the egg turning? I used to try to incubate with pans of water and towels and my humidity would swing all over the place even though my temps were perfectly controlled. I lost hundreds of eggs all with chicks that died in the shell. Having the proper humidity is extremely important, I found out the hard way.

Bad eggs don't just explode sometimes but other reasons would be so they don't contaminate and kill off the good eggy with fungus micro virus or anything of that nature, I think candling in general if done moderately is a good thing.

I am using a brinsea eco 20, temps and humidity have been rock solid and I am using both the manufacturer thermometer and a seperate one that was checked for acurracy w/ the salt water test, both have shown the same results and have been rock solid. Have not made it to the last 3 days yet.
