I attempted to candle my eggs today, its been approximately 10 days since I've started incubating them. I used a flashlight and a piece of cardboard, but all I could see was the aircell, which was sort of sideways in the egg, and there was a darkish mass. No movement. This can't be good...

The eggs are brown, and I don't have a maglite. So is it bad eggs, the dark shells, or is it b/c i used a not-as-good-as-a-maglite flashlight?

I wish I could help you, but last time I candled eggs, I could not see anything in one except a dark mass and no movement. It hatched out real nice. The eggs were pretty dark so I did not even try till day 10 and one looked as you described. and the other 2 I did not think were good, but left them with her anyway. And only 1 hatched just like I thought. but it was my first time and I had no idea. just what people here said. So I guess I would just leave them. Oh yes, my air cells were all on the end. though I am not sure which end now.

Good luck with your hatch, and I am sure someone alot more knowledgeable will be along with much better information.

As long as you have a good visible air cell on the big end of the egg and are seeing a dark mass in the brown egg all is well. Very hard to see blood vessels in darker eggs.

Right, dark masses are generally good when candling. I have brown eggs, sometimes you an see thinsg great and some just look like full eggs. Dont even think out giving up on them yet. Im sure you'll get something out of them.....

I agree, I don't always see movement and it has only been the last few hatches that I have noticed a little flutter. It is easy to miss. Check again on day 14 or just wait till day 18 to make sure you have aircell and the rest dark mass. If so you will have chicks hatching shortly after than
