Really great info there, Bird-Brain.

My boyfriend thinks my method of candleing is kinda strange, but it works really well for me. I use a mini-maglite, taking the plastic lens out. That leaves a slight curvature to "sit" on top of the egg. Works really great for all my EE eggs, and even the really dark brown ones.....also perfect size for my Coturnix eggs. Oh, the "strange" part????? hehehehe.......I gather some eggs from my bator, and close myself up in my closet....very dark in there

The first time I did that, he came in for lunch, and I didn't hear him........I think I was in there talking to myself (well, actually, was saying things like, 'cheep, cheep, cheep, come on lil cheepies') When I came out the door, he had the STRANGEST look on his face, OMG, it was PRICELESS!!!!!! I was like 'What???'

Anyway, it works great for me, is still how I candle...matter of fact, think I'm gonna do it now......I have 15 eggs that go on lockdown tomorrow.....including 3 of my EE eggs!!!!

I am incubating eggs for a friend and what is the difference between a porous egg and a bacteria infected egg? I read on one of the posts and it said when the egg has clear dots on the outside of it, it is infected with bacteria. Is that true? also does anyone viewing this post have any experance incubating serama eggs? Do you have to do anything different with serama eggs?

this turned out to be a blood spot after a power failure not happy

I wasnt sure so gave it a few extra days removed finally on day 10 when there was no movemet and the middle was black. cracked to find a mini form but it was dead.

this is a cracked blood spot at day 4 i thought it was dead so cracked it and it had a clear round blood line but no veining in comparison to the others

a pourous egg had a few of these and some with hairline cracking only visible on candling

this is my infertile egg the shadow at the top is definately just the yolk after waiting 5 days to confirm

very bad egg day 4 this one i thought was already part developed but nope it was going bad when i cracked it the yolk was grey and the clear was a milkie colour definate stink bomb in the making.

after some bad errors and failings i have a incubator that is working and another that is still doing my tree in!!

but i have chicks on there way on 31 oct and 3 nov so wish me luck. i candled tonight think i have at least 5 blood spots or bad chicks seem alittle floppy in movements like floaty. some darks chicks iam a little confused still with the air sac what is deemed healthy sizes etc

i also have one chick thats air sac it on the side half way very big not like any of the others. but it alive.

I just brought a hen who is broody by mistake i am not sure if to give her a few viable eggs or to try her with a few dried out chicks day but when to do it? if i get any. what do you think?

i could buy her her own set of 12 from auction next week i fancy some large light sussex (like a delaware) for eggs! and i have one duck egg she can try out lol would she brood the duck as her own lol or boot it out when it hatches ??

Thanks very much to all who added to this wonderful post. I'm a newbie and am hatching my first set of eggs (mail order/ebay). I candled them last night - day 6 and I think only 6 out of the dozen are OK. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. My husband and I build an incubator using missprissy's design as inspiration. I'm having trouble with the temp fluctuation with the hot water thermostat.

This is an awesome thread. Extremely informative for first time hatchers like myself. Ours is on day 7 today and we were thrilled to see them moving awile ago. We have 54 hens and only 3 roosters. I wanted to hatch about 20 birds and I figured the fertility rate would be low so we set 40 eggs. ALL 40 are developing. Our next hatch will be done at the grade school for the science class. I enjoy it so I know the children will. Since we furnish everything including the eggs I'm sure they will go for it.

@ Skymonkey, if you're going for 20 girls, then with ~ 50% being boys, hatching 40 should get you there!
