Candling

buy the brightest skinniest maglight flashlight you can find, go in a dark room and hold the flashlight up to the fat end of the egg and then move it around to look through the egg at different angles. I always do this with a batch of hot wax (melted candle) on hand. Why... because when I first started I tended to drop and crack them, if it doesn't crack through the membrane you can dip in hot wax (quick dip) and it seals the crack.

Well. It's difficult to answer that.

supplies needed:

)Flashlight
)Egg

What to do:

After the eggs have incubated for around 6-7 days, you can candle, to see

whats going on in the egg, and whether or not the egg is fertile. Take the

flashlight and egg, go into a dark room, simply hold the flashlight under the

egg, and you can see inside. A fertile egg will have cloudiness, mass, and/or

veins. An egg that is not fertile will be totally clear inside. If you candle

to soon, you will not be able to tell anything about the egg. Don't get into a

hurry, you could risk dropping the egg. Eggs can be out of the incubator for

about 20 minutes before actually starting to cool off, so theres no need to

rush candling, take your time. You need to look for specific signs that the egg

may be dead. Blood rings, are a sure sign the embryo was living at one point,

but now dead. Bloodrings normally occure once bacteria has somhow entered

the egg. Pictures of bloodring:

Same egg with bloodring, but cracked open:

Porous eggs are also somthing you should look for. Porous eggs can hatch, so no

need to throw them out, but normally they have a lower chance. Picture of porous egg:

This is what a chicken egg should look like on the 7-8th day of incubation:

You can see the veins, and the embryo.

Always wash your hands before handling or turning eggs, and be sure your hens

are nice and healthy, and have clean nest boxes for healthy eggs

I have read that porous eggs can explode in the incubators. I throw them out. They will most likely not hatch, as most people say.
