I am new to the chicken world and loving it! I have 4 Red-sexlink that have just started laying-1 Barred Rock and 3 black silkies-still waiting to know if these 4 are hens or roos~ hoping for hens but attached to them all now, so all are keepers :)
Live in Montana, built a new coop and run and just getting it all figured out-is this fun or what!!!!!!! And the fresh eggs-wow! Fantastic!

Hey there!! I'm new to this forum, but I've kept chickens for a couple years. I'm no expert at all. I'm still learning and I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing! But, you're right!!! It is fun and chickens are a pure joy to keep. I love all of mine. I have a variety pack I guess. 1 black australorp, 1 easter egger, 1 barred rock. and 1 rhode island red. I had a silkie rooster, but unfortunately a coyote got him (I think). I also had an Old English Game bantam hen that I ADORED, but she disappeared. A hawk I think.

No more free range without supervision until I can figure this all out. She was my favorite of them all. The sweetest and most friendly. I am trying my hand at hatching some eggs in a incubator right now. I'm on day 7. Not sure how it's going yet, but my fingers are crossed.

Anyways, nice to meet you!!!

You can post photos of your birds at "what breed or gender is this." In the case of silkies though, they are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not till they crow or lay eggs.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. It's good to have another member from Montana on here. In which part of Montana do you live? If you want to know the gender of your chickens, definitely post their pics on our What Breed or Gender is This? section in Chicken Breeds under the Forum at the top of the page and take advantage of our experts there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

What an awesome site this is! I have looked up so much information and learned so much! I am in NE Montana- 15miles from Canada and 45 miles from North Dakota.
Thanks for welcoming me!
