Canelo is continuing to improve, but he's not near as sassy as I would expect a horse of his age to be on a 28 degree day, not sure if I should be more concerned or thanking my lucky stars.
He does seem to have strong opinions on things (nylon halters and native grass hay are a big no from him , also not fond of people who wear hoodies) and he has an unfortunate habit of crowding me and then trying to walk 2 steps in front while we're walking. I've been holding him out away from me and making him back up, but it doesn't seem to be helping. How can I fix that?
Wormed him with Safeguard, should I wait for signs of improvement or wait a couple of weeks and worm again with Zimectrin or something else?
How long should it take for his ribs to disappear?
Is it safe to walk him around briefly with a lighter saddle or should I wait?
He's very responsive to pressure, but I'm afraid he'll lose that if I don't fix the pushiness. He's only pushy on a lead when we're going exploring, he stays out of my space the rest of the time.
How should I go about getting him accustomed to a blanket? He doesn't have a winter coat yet (also why doesn't he have a winter coat?) and I noticed him shivering slightly this morning, but with him being so accident prone I'm absolutely terrified to leave one on him while no one is supervising.
How much alfalfa is safe to give him in a day? He has free choice grass hay, grain and alfalfa pellets in the mornings and evenings, and right now is getting 2-3 flakes of alfalfa daily.
He's gone a full 24 hours without getting any new scrapes!
Also, the vet recommended a buddy (although she did say a goat would to the trick, but my goats hate horses) so Canelo is getting a baby sister from the kill pen in Stroud, Oklahoma! She will be on the same property and in sight/sound of Canelo, but penned in a separate area. If anyone can guess what breed or mix she is and age from the grainy screenshots that would be awesome! Her video may still be up on one of the lots pages as well.
Also name suggestions welcome, I was thinking Carmela or something similar.
And is that color called liver chestnut?

He was still wearing the halter because we had just gone for a walk-it doesn't stay on.

The filly's color appears to be black - most likely, silver black.

Canelo may just not have the genetics for a serious winter coat (one of my QH's gets a lot more hair than the other). If the obvious lack of nutrition he was exhibiting when you got him was of long duration, he may not have had sufficient protein reserves to make hair.:idunno One time, I was involved in re-feeding a starved horse that had held his winter coat long past the time he should have shed it; once we improved his diet, he shed it out in record time.
