I, too, was thinking predator. Good suggestion on the hardware cloth. I use 1/2" hardware cloth to cover all windows - attached with screws and washers, not just staples. Coons are strong buggers. No cracks, no crevices, all doors are pulled shut tight...
I hope you don't have to deal with this again.
