Can't Decide About The Chicks

Ok I'll get a bag of chick starter. My chicks will be in a 12x12 run when they get big enough and in a coop at night. Once the grass, weeds, ect are ate down in their run, they will get let out to roam and then back to the coop at night. Any vaccines I need to think about?

I called my county extension agent (in the phone book under county government) before I got chicks. The agent lined me up with a professor that teaches poultry disease at the State University. I don’t know if your agent is that good.

After discussing how I planned to manage my flock (closed flock. I don’t show and I don’t bring in other chicks except from a hatchery) and talking about the rate of disease in this area, I decided to not vaccinate. For example, there had been one reported case of Marek’s in this county in the previous two years. I did not consider that a great threat.

I don’t know what the right answer is for you.

I'll give my county extension agent a call and see what I can't find out. My flock is going to be a closed flock as well. Only chicks that will be introduced are chicks that I have incubated or have brought in from a hatchery. Thanks Ridgerunner you've given me lots of good information to get started with.
