I just recently got my first chicken a month ago from a local feed store and i am in love with him. They insisted it was a girl however within a couple of weeks he began to crow. I'm in a dilemma now... I feel like i can't trust people or feed stores without some gaurantee that the chickens i get will be hens. I am so attached to my rooster that there is no way i could part with him now and my city only allows us to have a maximum of 5 chickens. I was looking at mypetchicken and they said they could only sell a minimum of 7 chickens to my area but they practically gaurantee them to be all girls. Is there any way i can do this so that i get all hens, the breeds of chickens i want, a reasonable price and only 4 hens/chicks? I hope this is in the right forum...... Thanks for any help.

The accuracy rate is 90% on anyplace I have seen so you could still get a ro:hmmut of 40 pullets I bought I had 2 roos, not bad. Good luck and hoping you get all hens.

Maybe you can try to get into contact with other people that have or are interested in chickens and see if they want to split on an order with you. It might benefit you even more, as shipping cost can be split between you and other person/people.

Remember, though, that any "guarantee" amounts only to taking back a rooster and replacing it with another chicken. That doesn't help if you've gotten attached to the bird.

I know how you feel. We had to rehome the rooster we raised from a chick and it broke our hearts. We loved him. But we did find a good home for him, so that helps somewhat.

The only way you can be certain is to get an older bird.

I just purchased my chicks from Cackle Hatchery, They have a "City Special" where you can buy just five pullets of any of their breeds. I too live in a city and we are allowed only 10 chickens, and I really only wanted a total of 5. My chicks arrived yesterday, and all were very healthy and happy, They were double boxed, with extra heating pad. I live in New England and weather here changes daily so I am very happy they all arrived safely. I would give them a call, they were very helpful over the phone, and you can asked all the questions you want. I am very pleased with this hatchery and will use them again. So if you only need five, and want pullets, give them a call.
