Can't exterminate northen mites!

that is interesting I did think about the bedding ! did you get all the mites? notice any in the house?
I have two boys so this going to be interesting time management.
I clean the coop out each week, I now have a powder build up in the sides of the coop from powdering so much.
I think I am just going to have to do it and bath them in the garage.

Thank you I really appreciate any advice.
I don't know how I am going to pull this off it is snowing pretty badly.
I dusted them 4 days ago and they are looking worse than ever can I dust them again tonight? or should I wait the 10 days?

I am thinking I will have a bucket in the garage with the diluted stuff and dip them then blow dry them and go and clean their coop out. I only have a dog cage which will be tight for them not ideal and they will probably be super stressed. Worried I will be bringing mites into the garage which is attached to the house but I don't want them to freeze. Do I need to use a new batch of dip for each bird? My orpington is pretty big so she will be interesting. I do have a kiddy pool that I could use but then I might not get the dip effect.

I think this is going to keep happening until I can move them in the spring.
I am also thinking I might have to get a new coop.

I noticed the area gets visited by loads of birds and a squirel and at night I think we have racoons because I found a trail that looks like they would have done it. not to mention mice and the deer in october.

They are loosing so much weight! I gave them oatmeal with warm milk and a tin of cat food this morning.

Very worried about them and fell I need to go out there and detox everything.
Going to also buy the Ivermectin.
I hope none of this affect my cat Mr Pops.

Hope you are all having a good Sunday.

Find a way to do the dip. It might be a challenge with the circumstances, but figure it out. Don't let the birds get chilled though. You can use the same mixture for all of them if the quantitiy is sufficient. The dip is going to get the mites. Take your time and be thorough.

Fowl mites live on birds. Discourage the birds.

Since you do not have a place to keep them, just rid your self of the bedding and spray everything with the the same stuff, but use it according to the directions for spraying a building. Put a layer of seven dust on the roost and nest boxes.

Fowl mites are not a problem for you or your cat.

Use the ivermectin last. I think it is useful, but based on personal experience I think the residual effect is not as long as some think. It is more effective with mammals. You need the dip if your birds are loosing weight. You WILL KILL the mites that are killing the birds with the dip. Everything else is getting stragglers, and retreating to get new ones that hatch. You will see immediate improvement after the dip.

You only need to treat at the 10 day mark for the mites, then again 10 days later if you still have an infestation.

It is so important to get rid of all the bedding each time you treat. I used to use lots of shavings and got cheap...I didn't want to throw away the shavings. Well they didn't go away until I threw away the shavings and retreated. Ugh.

Now I use sweetpdz on the floor and treat the whole floor like a poop board. I scrape every day and sprinkle more sweet pdz down. This doesn't work so well when it is freezing as the caecal poos stick. But the powder (not granules) of the sweet PDZ make it so that it is easy to scrape up the poo. This will of course ruin the wood floor after awhile. But I like it better because they don't get mites as much for some reason.

Also I noticed that when I tried using alfalfa hay as bedding that I itched like CRAZY. So that went out in the run.

How's the flock doing now? I use Sevin and DE. I had the mites too but they are all gone now. It was so bad one of my chickens feathers were horrible and so was her eggs. She has feathered in very nicely and I'm waiting to see how her eggs are this year.

Everyone needs to get rid of the source also. If you have wild birds getting in your coop you will continue to get infested. I had got rid of mites several times and they would come back. I finally figured out it was the sparrows that would come in the coop everyday, I think they even roosted in there at night. Also, if you see any nest anywhere around them get rid of it. When they leave the nest mites left will look for another host. I haven't killed anything I didn't eat since I was a kid, but this mite thing made be do what I had to do to solve it and that meant killing the sparrows that would come into the coop. I have wire over their run and they could still get in. People need to understand these things came from another host, and if if they don't find the source they will continue to have outbreaks.

Update!
So we are having freak snow storms out here and the weather is just bonkers so I have not received any packages or managed to get to the feed store to get the products I need. And clean out day and dust day is tomorrow. I have not seen any mites on the eggs and have not managed to pick a bird up yet. The really badly affected one the one that had all the gunck on her bum is having a bit of hard time the other ones are picking her bum clean I don't know if it is a natural cycle thing or they are just bored but she is bare and does not look to happy. I will try and get some of that purple spray. I have been feeding them warm porridge and cat food in the morning and warm corn at night with the normal food spoilt but still alive and looking a bit healthier on the weight side. I just hope they survive the night.
I do think the sparrows are the problem, I noticed a whole load of them and off course as a beginner though oh what wonderful birds mixing with my birds! will think of a solution for them.
Will keep you more updated.
