Last night I found one of my girls sitting in the yard when all the others had gone to roost. I carried her to the hen house and it took her a long time to come out this morning. I noticed she was walking kinda slow with her tail down. So I kept my eye on her. Her vent is pumping like she has to lay an egg or do her duty and she's just been sleeping and lethargic. I thought maybe she was egg bound but I can not feel any egg. I did soak her in a warm tub and she did poop, very runny and a yellow/ green color.
She is a Black Austrolorp and just over a year old. She was fine yesterday until evening.
She will not eat or drink. Her eyes are bright and yellow with no discharge and nothing from her nostrils. her breathing seems a little labored but no wheezing or rattleing. Her legs are under her normally.
Any information would be helpful. Thanks

well...Agnes Died just a bit ago..... we are sad...this is our first loss.... still no idea what was wrong with her... we will bring her for labs....RIP Aggy girl. any ideas?...

I'm so sorry about Agnes. The first loss is usually the hardest, although I always feel heartbroken when I lose one. Sadly, it's a part of chicken keeping. But I hate it.

Really good idea to have her tested, to protect the rest of the flock. Please let us know when you get the results.

Sorry for the sad circumstances, but please let me say Welcome To BYC.

Thank you, we will update when we find out what caused this.....yes all part of raising and caring for these wonderful birds.... I will need to develop a bit thicker skin.I didn't think I would fall so hard for "a bunch of chickens"..... but so amazed at what personalitys they each have, I have really come to love our ladys. Again thank you for the condolences and the warm welcome to the group. Mrs. Mojoe 37

They sure do get you the girls. This weekend i lost one of my 3 oldest ladies in the pen at aged 8 years, Still sad to see them go no matter what age they are. I hope you find what it was that took your lady from you and welcome to BYC too.

I'm so sorry you lost Agnes. We had to have our Buff Brahma Peaches put to sleep this morning, so I am right there with you..

Im so sorry to hear about that. Please let us know what the test results say, my ckicken is sort of acting like yours was.

My speckled sussex is acting the same. Yesterday morning laid two shell-less eggs connected to each other. Saw her sitting in the nest yesterday afternoon, but no egg. Vent pumping like she needs to expel something. Today she's stopped eating. Stays by herself, doesn't come when called. Her crop seems full. Haven't seen her poop specifically. Any help would be appreciated,.

Wanted to update with Sparky, my speckled sussex. She was sluggish when she went in the coop last night. Next morning I found a really hard poop. I looked at it, it was like compressed grass, very fibrous, hardly digested. Have a feeling it came from Sparky. There was also the remains of an egg-like substance on the floor. No shell, not a full egg amount, but definitely an egg. She was at the door, interested in eating, ready to explore. She also laid an egg today, normal size. So we're good for now. She's always been an adventurous eater.

Does anyone know if being constipated could prevent an egg from forming properly?
