About 10 days ago, Ruth had the growth appear by her beak. Several days ago the one above her eye appeared and they are growing. Today I noticed the black mark around her eye (it was not there yesterday) and it is not dirt. Yesterday her eye began watering. The growths are hard. She is not scratching them. Any suggestions? None of the other chickens have this.

Welcome to BYC!

Your hen could have Fowl Dry Pox.
Maybe they could be bug bites (like mosquitoes?).
There are some other diseases that cause growths and scabs on the face.

I hope this helps. And I hope she gets better!

Welcome to BYC. Is she new or have you added any new chickens recently? The swelling around the eye could be signs of a respiratory or sinus infection, especially if she has other symptoms such as runny nose, cough, sneeze, or rattly breathing. The black areas could be dried blood from her scratching the skin, or being pecked. Can you see any mites or lice around her face or head that could have caused scratching or swelling?

Ruth and her mates were added several weeks ago. No symptoms except her eye started watering. It could be from being pecked as we have a new chicken that is attacking everyone. We are new chicken owners, moved from the city in March. There are no mites or any bugs around her eye. The black area is now surrounding her whole eye. It is growing and I don't think it is blood. Thanks for your response.

When my roosters comb or wattles have been pecked and bleeding, the next day it turns black where the blood is. You can clean the eye with saline, and Terramycin eye ointment, Vetericyn Eye Gel, or plain Neosporin ointment can be applied to the eye if it appears to be infected or inflamed. Have you seen any other spots on any of the other chickens that could look like fowl pox scabs?

All the other chickens are completely clean. None of them have anything wrong. This chick is about 8 weeks old. I looked at the pics for fowl pox and they don't look like what Ruth has. Thanks for your help.

No, in sinus infections or respiratory diseases one or both sides of the face can be affected. If the eye were pecked, it could have drainage or eye bubbles as well as in a sinus infection.

The growths around Ruth's eyes are growing and now a new growth has appeared on the other side by her beak. We are applying a product by Anchor "Blue Lotion Spray" (more purple than blue)and it doesn't seem to help. We have used a triple antibiotic cream and that helped the black ring around her eye to almost go away. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
