Hello everybody, I have a problem that I'm hoping someone might have some experience with. Recently we got 2 Mallard drakes from a friend, we brought them home and they immediately hid in a patch of weeds in our front yard. We haven't seen them much since. I know they're still here but they have an excellent hiding spot cause we RARELY ever see them. We've seen them maybe twice since we brought them home 2 weeks ago. This past weekend we bought a pair of Rouen hens and brought them home in the hopes that they would draw the drakes out. They hung around our front yard for the first 2 days, playing in the kiddie pool in the evenings and sleeping under our house at night but now they are missing as well. I haven't seen them for 2 days. Where could they be? Where do ducks like to hide and will they wander far? I have 6 acres of open farm land with woods on both sides and corn fields in front of and behind us. I'm worried thay have left for good. The drakes can't fly cause their wings have been clipped and I've heard Rouens rarely fly and when they do its not very far but I'm worried that they just started wandering and didn't stop and now they're too far away. I'm new to ducks so I don't know if they do things like that or not, these are my very first ducks ever. Could the hens possibly be laying and won't wander far from their nests? Or are they like some chickens that won't get off their nests for anything, even to eat or drink? Any help, insight or advice would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

It is generally a good idea to keep new birds penned for several weeks until they regard their new environment as 'home'. Hopefully they are just hiding someplace, but there is also the possibility that they have been taken by a predator. The hidden nest scenario is highly unlikely.

Oh, ok. I hope they haven't been taken by a predator. We have foxes around but I didn't think they would be able to kill a duck. I feel terrible now. If I find them I will definitely pen them up for a while til they know where home is. I am completely stupid when it comes to ducks, I've never owned any til now, this has definitely taught me a lesson. I'm going on a duck hunt and I'm going to scour my yard til I find them or some sign of them and if I do find them, I'll pen them up for a couple weeks til they know this home. Thank you so much for replying.

The behavior of the mallards is not surprising - many still retain a lot of their wild instincts. Rouens tend to be more homebodies. Fox can readily kill ducks as can bobcats, coyotes, etc.

Oh, ok. Do you know of any decoys I could set out to deter fixed and things? I have owls to scare away snakes and hawks but I don't know what to do about the foxes. If they got my ducks I surely don't want them around anymore.

Fox are extremely smart and readily figure out that 'decoys' are not real.  The only thing that educates them is a shotgun.
Lol, ok. That's what my husband just said. He said if we can't find the ducks tonight he's going to sit out there with his shotgun. If they already got 2 of my ducks I don't want them to get the mallards and my chickens too. They won't be back after tonight. My husband's a pretty good shot, lol.
